Jim Sumpter Bio

Jim SumpterJim was born in Evanston, Illinois.  At the age of 5, his family moved to Southern California and Jim embraced the SoCal lifestyle heartily.  He began surfing long before the craze hit in the early 60s and has extensively traveled the Southern California coastline in search of the perfect wave.

He graduated from Phineas Banning High School in Wilmington, California in 1965 and attended Brigham Young University, majoring in journalism, with plans to become an attorney.

December 2nd, 1966 found Jim standing in a Marine Corps recruiting office in Torrance, California.  The classic Marine Corps come-on, "The Marine Corps Builds Men!", spotted on a placard outside the recruiting office, captured Jim's attention as he drove his 1948 Ford woody along Pacific Coast Highway on his way home from the beach that day.

Before midnight that very night, Jim would be at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego and a few months later, became one of the few...one of the proud...one of the Marines in Viet Nam.

After more than 20 months in Viet Nam (having extended his 13 month tour of duty in order to qualify for an early release from the Marine Corps), Jim returned home with all body parts intact.  You can see his separation papers (DD 214) here, and his honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps here.

After some downtime readjusting to civilization while living in Hermosa Beach, California, Jim made the decision to pursue a career in radio.

He quickly rose through the ranks as a disc jockey, then program director, general manager, executive vice-president of a group of broadcast stations, and even becoming part-owner of a radio station in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Along the way, Jim worked at radio stations from Florida to California and Texas to Ohio.

A powerful mentor, Jim has been instrumental in the development of some of radio's most successful personalities, program directors, and managers.

Jim has owned several companies - focusing on commercial and industry-specific software systems and programs, radio station consulting, and Internet marketing.

In August of 2003, Jim began a new career as a Talk Show Host, starting at K-TALK Radio in Salt Lake City, Utah where he has lived, except for a brief professional interruption, since 1988.

He is divorced, and dad to four grown children.

And, the radio friend to his growing, loyal following of fellow conservatively thinking, freedom-loving listeners.
